Who We Are

We are New Hemisphere, a brand company of Midlands Nutrition. Our parent company ‘Midlands’ has been operating in the seed and agricultural sector for over 30 years and were one of the first companies in New Zealand to be granted a licence to grow hemp. Since 2002, New Hemisphere has been doing just that – producing high quality, natural hemp seed food and supplement products that meet the demands of a growing consumer market. We’ve been delivering these to our New Zealand and International Export clients now for many years.

New Hemisphere’s Story

Due to its geographical latitude, pristine air quality, consistent clean water supply and exceptional soils, New Zealand provides one of the best environments in the world for farming high quality, nutrient-dense produce.

In 1990, 3 young farmers from humble beginnings created “Midlands” – an arable farming company worthy of distinction. Their combined knowledge of New Zealand’s land and soil and regenerative farming practices, enabled them to grow undeniably superior crops for food production. Soon they were producing world class seeds eventually becoming New Zealand’s top agricultural producers of specialty seeds and food ingredients delivering 95% of the country’s Marrowfat peas and 40% of the world’s hybrid Carrot seed. From there, the company contined to expand leading into other areas such as apiaries, contracting, research & development, nutritional oils and our hemp foods under the brand “New Hemisphere”. We were one of the first companies in NZ to hold licensure to grow hemp.

Midland’s research and development team are critical to the business as this enables us to continually explore new avenues to improve our product range. We also have our own agronomists allowing us to successfully partner with our contract farmers and provide the additional support for high quality, high yield crops. The substantial presence we have ‘on farm’ during critical stages of production support our farmers as welll as ensure the success of our entire agricultural range. New Hemisphere’s strong quality assurance programme guarantees complete traceability from the seed sown in the soil right through to the final product you see on the shelf. Our New Hemisphere range began with producing our high-quality, natural hemp seed oil. Following it’s huge success we expanded into a full range of hemp food products including protein, flour and the raw seeds – all ideal for baking components or added to smoothies and other dishes.

Packaging & Recycling

We’re moving towards our packaging becoming easier to recycle for the end-user as well as choosing packaging products that mean less energy needed in the recycling process. To trial this, our product “Omega-3 Boost” is being packaged in aluminium bottles instead of glass.

We’ve opted for aluminium bottles because they can be recycled indefinitely and, compared to other recyclable materials, use just 5% energy in the process.

Moving away from glass also means a switch from the protective packaging like bubble wrap to prevent breakages. We can now use honeycomb packaging wrap which is 100% recyclable. We also don’t have to worry about glass breaking in transit, and also means reduced emissions spent in the transportation of replacement of broken glass products. Using aluminium also means our shipping bags can be r3packs made from recycled plastic and which are also recyclable again in the soft plastics recycling solutions.

All the good things:

  • Aluminium can go in your yellow bin.
  • It can be recycled indefinitely
  • Recycling aluminum uses just 5% of the energy and emits only 5% of the CO2 compared to other primary production.
  • By recycling it reduces the waste going to landfill.
  • It is the most cost-effective material to recycle.
  • It is robust during transport – meaning we can cut down on protective plastic packaging like bubble wrap.

Aluminium is a key resource to recover requiring significantly less energy to recycle than glass. It makes sense to move away from glass and offer you, our customers, a sustainable, more environmentally safe, recyclable product.

"We at New Hemisphere want to ensure we're doing everything we can to reduce our landfill contribution. This means moving towards product containers that can be more easily recycled, and using shipping packaging that won't need to end up in landfill."

Wayne Saunders, GM

TRACEABILITY

New Hemisphere’s range of specialty hemp oils and hemp foods are masterfully created in our purpose-built premises based in the heart of agricultural New Zealand, the Canterbury Plains. Our commitment to food safety, and a focus on the highest quality standards, ensures we have complete traceability – from planted seed right through its journey to its final destination.

CUTTING EDGE TECHNOLOGY

We also have our own modern, purpose built seed processing and oil extraction facility. The New Hemipshere processing plant uses cutting edge processes to ensure maximum quality of our hemp seed oil and dry foods is achieved every time. Because we can trace our products from seed to bottle we can assure our customers our products are free of contaminants and any chemical-residues.
